AVALANCHE GEARS

HEADINGS

Avalanche Transceivers: Every person should wear a transceiver and know how to use it to locate a victim in less than 5 minutes. The standard frequency is 457, older units may not work at this frequency and must be retired.

Shovel: At least 2 shovels per party are required on any trip in avalanche terrain. The shovel must be strong, light, and reliable.

Probe:  One probe is recommended to locate the buried victim when the transceiver has located the approximate area of burial. A probe will also indicate the depth of burial and reduce the risk of striking the victim with the shovel blade.

First Aid Kit:  Always have a first aid kit when travelling in the mountains.
