The effect of altitude on life and environment

HEADINGS

The meteorological changes with altitude as a whole lead to a "retuning" of bodily functions towards an improved defence mechanism. Further advantages of the altitude are:

At 1500 m there are practically no household dust mites. What that means to the numerous dust mite allergy sufferers requires no stretch of imagination.

There is relatively little airborne dust at this altitude. In the Alps at 1500 m, 43% of annual precipitation falls as snow. Snow is the best protection against airborne dust.

More conifers than deciduous trees grow in the high mountains. This results in a more limited, later and shorter season of tree pollen. The same is true for floral pollen.

Mould spores and bacteria are present in incomparably lower concentrations than in the lowlands.

Vertical winds ensure a cleansing of the air, besides the fact that the lack of industry in the highlands means less airborne pollutants.
