DASK - ANATOLIA MOUNTAIN
MARATHON is a adventure competition in nature organised by DASK. It is a
competitive event for teams of two. At the start of each day teams are
presented with a course of varying numbers of control stations which are
identified on the map. They must visit each control station in the
prescribed order but may chose their own route between each station. A
feature of the event is the overnight camp at which all teams must be
self-sufficient with everything being carried throughout the two days of
competition. The courses are planned using the outdoor country map scale
1:25000, and this map is given to every competitor just before
competition.
The precise location of the
start/finish which is changed from year to year.
The idea of Mountain
Marathon was conceived by Gerry Charnley, a young police outdoor college
instructor. Gerry and his friend, Alistair Pattern came together
to organize the ultimate navigational challenge, the first Mountain
Marathon in 1968. The marathon served as an experiment to explore the
feasibility of applying the skills acquired in orienteering being
applied to competitive navigation in wild desolate mountain country(KIMM)
(Now, OMM).
